Book Lovers Day: What our Team (and our Kids) are Reading Right Now

It's National Book Lovers Day! Ahh, the feeling of curling up with a good book, there is nothing like it... Wishing you could read faster because it's so good, feeling attached to the characters like they are old friends, staying up way too late to read just one more chapter. We've all been there. Even better is watching our kids do the same thing. It's something we can all share in, which is why we, at CertifiKID, decided to put together a list of books we (and our kids) are currently loving. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have!

The Tattooist of Aushwitz by Heather Morris

It was the best book I have read recently. It was very upsetting and hard to read at times, but I believe super important for all of to read and remember this time in our history. I was able to finish it in two days as it sucks you in from the start and you can't stop reading.

The Reckoning by John Grisham

This wasn’t a typical Grisham book steeped in the law or based more on current events. It was a page-turning story filled with suspense about a southern family from a much earlier time impacted by war, loss, mental illness, and loneliness that challenged many preconceived perceptions.

Daughter- Katie Green (Age 13)

Camp So-and-So by Mary McCoy 

Camp So-and-So is about 25 girls who all go to a summer camp of the same name and find out that the camp is not quite what they thought it would be. (Hint: It's a dangerous place.) Each cabin is faced with a different challenge where their only goal is survival. This book is a total page-turner full of thrilling surprises you never expected - so much fun to read on summer vacation! I highly recommend it!

We're not reading Harry Potter quite yet, but she is loving the touch and feel activity books. She is able to look at herself (one of her favorite pastimes) and play with different textures. I've memorized the book because she's forever handing it to me to read.

The Immortalists by Choe Benjamin

I just finished The Immortalists, a family saga about four siblings who meet a psychic that claims to be able to tell anyone the date they will die. The kids are given their dates, but will they come true? How big a role does fate and fortune play in our lives versus how much we make of it? This was a great read but heavy at times and left me pondering some big philosophical questions. I am ready for an easy beach read now!

I Spy by Jean Marzollo, Walter Wick, Carol Carson

Remy has been into any type of "seek and find" type book this summer. They are interactive and bring a bit of fun to bedtime reading. We own a few I Spy and Where's Waldo? books, but our local library also has a great selection in the kids non-fiction section. When asked why he likes these books so much, Remy said, "because Waldo wears red, my favorite color". 

Daughter: Macy (Age 8)

Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene

Macy got the Nancy Drew box set for her birthday and has been breezing through them since January. She is on book 5 of 10. I thought maybe they'd be too old fashioned for her but she loves them! Timeless classics.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

So readable, so real. It felt like I was reading about the life of a friend. Her writing style is so relatable, so down to earth. I was charmed by Michelle and Barack's romance. I was inspired by their parenting philosophy. I am in awe of their service to their communities and country. I rarely read books a second time, but this will be a book I read again.

Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep by Liz Kessler

This book is about a girl who could turn into a mermaid. She lives on an island that Triton created and she accidentally awoke the kraken. Although the kraken is a deathly monster, she had to figure out how to tame it and put it back to sleep. I was sad to finish this book because I loved it so much!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter is in his 5th year at Hogwarts. He is studying for and taking his O.W.L.s test when all of these magical disasters appear. I like this book and it a good time for me to have quiet time. Reading something magical puts me in the zone.

Auggie & Me by RJ Palaccio

It is a spin-off of Wonder, which I read last year. The book shows friendship and empathy. Even though Auggie has differences on the outside, he is still a great person on the inside. The story talks about three different people who may have not understood Auggie at first and might have not been nice. Once they got to know him, they understood better and it made them act better too.

The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, and See is one of my favorite authors. Her latest novel centers on the fascinating matriarchal culture and sisterhood of Korea's haenyeo (traditional female divers) on Jeju Island during the period spanning Japanese occupation, WWII, and the Korean War and its aftermath. Our family happened to be visiting Jeju this summer, so the timing made it particularly special. It was one of those reads where I was so invested in the characters that I didn't want their stories to end!

The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer

This book is about two kids who have a fairytale book given to them by their grandmother. They later find out the book is a portal into a different world. I really like this book because it is adventurous and I love mysteries and fairytales. It is a chapter book series and I think it is really interesting and one of those books you can't stop reading.

Just Add Magic, Cindy Callaghan 

Cindy Callaghan's books are so age appropriate! Lindsay has now read all her books and absolutely loves the Amazon Original live action series of Just Add Magic!

Theodore Boone The Accomplice, by John Grisham

As a mom, John Grisham is one of my favorite authors and when I saw that he was coming out with a series for kids, I knew immediately my kids would love it. His books capture the reader from chapter one and keep them hooked until the very end!

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus

Echo Ridge is small-town America. Ellery’s never been there, but she’s heard all about it. Her aunt went missing there at age seventeen. Now Ellery has to move there to live with a grandmother she barely knows. The longer Ellery is in Echo Ridge, the clearer it becomes that everyone there is hiding something. The thing is, secrets are dangerous - and most people aren’t good at keeping them. In Echo Ridge, it’s safest to keep your secrets to yourself.

We’re loving reading this because the characters are interesting, the story is suspenseful and we can’t wait to read what happens next!
