Family-Friendly Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in the Washington, D.C. Area

Mexico's independence day, Cinco de Mayo, marks their victory from the French and is a day full of celebration in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo is a great holiday to teach your kids about our neighbors in Mexico and explore their culture. There are so many fun and easy ways to celebrate like visiting an authentic local taco spot, helping your kids pronounce easy Spanish phrases, and enjoying some of these fun, family-friendly events in Washington, D.C. area!

Running of the Chihuahuas, D.C. Wharf
The 8th Annual Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf in D.C. returns on Saturday, May 4 (rain date May 5). This fun celebration is to benefit Rural Dog Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to pulling dogs from high-kill shelters. On top of watching all the cute dogs race, there will be a dog costume contest (for non-race dogs too!), beer garden and DJ. This exciting event will take place from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the District Pier. Sign your dog up to race here.

Cinco de MayoThon, Downtown Bethesda
The Cinco de MayoThon event is hosted by the BCC-Rotary and the Mexican Embassy and will take place in Downtown Bethesda on April 27 from noon to 5 p.m. This fun celebration of culture will include a micro-race for all ages. Run from balloon arch to balloon arch, a total of 164 feet, and finish at the festival! There will also be a piñata pit, a Tequila and Beer garden, contests, food and more! All proceeds from this event will be donated to JUCONI, a charity serving at-risk children and families. It is $20 per person to race, sign up here.

Corazón Folklórico: Passport DC at MCI, Embassy Row D.C.
Come celebrate at the Corazón Folklórico: Passport DC Festival where over 40 embassies come together and open their doors to visitors and residents of DC. There will be a Corazón Folklórico's performance at the Mexican Cultural Institute's Passport DC event. This festival will take place on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with three performances at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. No tickets are required, fun for all ages!

La Milla de Mayo 2019, Olde Town Gaithersburg
La Milla de Mayo (The May Mile) takes place on May 4 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m at Olde Town, Gaithersburg. This one-mile run/walk is a great start for those who are new to the sport or for those who want to have fun in the block party atmosphere. After the race celebrate with music, food, salsa dancing and more! Runners of all ages and levels are welcome to participate in this fun event and there will be a free kids run to kick off the race. Cinco de Mayo on the Rooftop, Canton
Merritt Canton is hosting their first rooftop party of the summer, Cinco de Mayo on the Rooftop, on May 5 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. This Cinco de Mayo party will have piñatas and margaritas, traditional Mexican foods and flavors, and fun Mexican music! There will be games and activities for all ages! Members of the gym are free, and non-members are $25.
