Real Mom Review: Great Country Farms

Real Mom Reviews Things to Do DC/MD/VA

Great Country Farms is located in Bluemont, Virginia, a short drive from the D.C. suburbs. On the drive, we passed small mom and pop shops, including the adorable Bluemont General Store. Dirt Farm Brewing and Bluemont Vineyard are also close by. Great Country even provides a discount at the Vineyard with the purchase of farm admission.

The main building at Great Country Farms is full of pre-picked items and other items made or grown on the farm.

Admission to the farm is paid for here, along with tickets to ride the cow train, animal feed and bags for the gemstone mining activity. The U-pick wagon rides also leave from this building at the top of every hour.

The cashier provided us with a printed map of the whole farm, which is arranged in a large circle. It's an explore at your own pace setup. I suggest starting to the left and moving around clockwise. The restrooms are the first building, the perfect place to have everyone make a pit stop beforehand.

Along the path we found different areas and places to explore. Each area was well labeled and had picnic tables or benches. For infants or children needing a stroller, I would suggest any type with larger wheels or baby wearing. The ground is uneven and changes from gravel to grass quite often.

Our favorite areas included the jumping pillow, barn yard, farmer’s fort, Katie’s corn bin and the ninja course.

There are a lot of different wood swing set type areas we didn’t stop at because some were in direct sunlight or very buggy. My biggest suggestion for this excursion is sunscreen, bug spray and water!

When we completed the circle, we stopped in to the Roosteraunt for ice cream. They have mostly just snacks in the restaurant, nothing to make a full meal out of.

The farm allows you to bring in your own food and drink, so if you wanted to make a day trip out of it, there are plenty of picnic tables located outside the Roosteraunt or in the covered shed area close by.

Since there are so many different areas of the farm, it’s suitable for kids of all ages. Families with different ages will find something everyone can enjoy. We spent about two hours at Great Country farms but could have easily stayed longer!
