Labor Day Capital Concert in Washington, D.C.
The National Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Labor Day Capital Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capital on September 1st. The concert features Mykal Kilgore and Nova Payton in a program of popular songs by R&B hitmakers including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, James Brown, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and others.
Olde Towne Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade in Gaithersburg, Maryland
The Olde Towne Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade is one of the biggest events of the year. September 2nd from 1 to 3 p.m., you can watch the fire engines, high school marching bands, clowns, horses, and giant balloons fill the streets of Olde Town Gaithersburg.
The REACH at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.- FREE
The much anticipated grand opening celebration of The REACH at The Kennedy Center is finally here! There will be a ton of cool events as a preview of what The REACH is all about. The REACH is The Kennedy Center's new living theater and works to break down the barriers between the audience and art. It's meant to be educational and present live art so close the audience can touch it. The opening festivities take place September 7th-22nd with fun for the whole family. From masterclasses and workshops to dance parties and DJ sets, the Opening Festival offers a first glimpse of the many varied and interactive ways that visitors will be able to experience art at The REACH.

To celebrate the opening of The REACH, the Kennedy Center's free daily Millennium Stage performances will take place on The REACH Plaza stage instead. Performances are still free, but tickets are required (Get your tickets HERE).
Here are some family-friendly activities and shows you don't want to miss:
Moonshot Studio: September 7th-22nd- A drop-in activity space where families can explore and create throughout the festival.
The Broadway Collective: September 9th- Robert Hartwell and associate instructors from The Broadway Collective will teach three dance combos. Learn choreography inspired by the best and brightest on Broadway and enjoy an entertaining and interactive evening on the plaza. No dance experience required!
DJing Workshop with Words, Beats, and Life (Youth Session): September 14th- Kids can learn the skills they need to become a real DJ, in a casual, fun setting! Participants will be trained in skills such as scratching, beat matching, and blending, and will leave with the skills needed to perform live!
Family Yoga Session: September 15th- The class will incorporate yoga poses for kids and adults to enjoy together, as well as yoga and mindfulness games and breathing and relaxation techniques.
Journey to Africa:Sharing Family Experiences: September 15th- This is a family workshop that takes participants through an imaginary journey that introduces movements, sounds, and instruments of different West African traditions.
D.C. Public Schools Educator Showcase: September 16th: Join music educators in D.C. Public Schools who will be recognized as outstanding musicians that perform nationally and internationally.
Youth Vocal Showcase: September 19th: A showcase of music organizations that support youth artistic development. Enjoy an evening of music from the Children’s Chorus of Washington, Duke Ellington School of the Arts Vocal Music, and the Washington National Opera’s Institute, prior to the broadcast of WNO's Showboat.
National Dance Day: September 21st: A free daylong celebration of dance emceed by three-time Emmy Award®-Winner Debbie Allen. National Dance Day will feature interactive dance routines and lessons for all ages and experience levels, outdoor performances, live music, film screenings, and more. Participants can learn the official, nation-wide 2019 National Dance Day routine set to Dua Lipa's "Electricity" on the REACH's mainstage.
Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville, MD
If the handmade crafts from over 140 artisans don't get you to visit the Maryland Renaissance Festival then maybe the 42 food and beverage emporiums might convince you. Just outside Annapolis, the festival takes place every Saturday and Sunday (plus Labor Day Monday) through October. Over 200 performers take over the 10 stages for constant entertainment and even meander the festival.
George Washington Patriot Run at Mount Vernon in Washington, D.C.
The USATF-certified 10K and 5K course is on September 8th and takes runners up and down the scenic George Washington Memorial Parkway and traces Washington’s footsteps through the historic area at Mount Vernon.
Cross the finish line with the beautiful Mansion in view and enjoy a Sam Adams 1776 beer on the 12-acre field! Don’t worry, there is something for the kiddos too! A free Kids Fun Run will be held near the finish line at Mount Vernon (registration required).
Rumpus Room at The Black Cat in Washington, D.C.
The Rumpus Room located at the Black Cat is a family-friendly daytime dance party created by DJ's who wanted to share the night club experience with their kids. Disco balls, lights, and music create a fun atmosphere for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and caregivers. The music is latest kid-friendly hits and kept at a safe volume. It's designed for kids ages 8 and under. Dance it up on Sunday, September 8th.
DC State Fair in Washington, D.C.
The DC State Fair is a free showcase of the region’s agricultural and artistic talents. On September 8th from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. in Gateway D.C. there will be contests, demonstrations, live music, and educational workshops for kids and adults. There is even a pet parade!

Washington Monument Reopens in Washington, D.C.

After a 37-month closure, the Washington Monument reopens to the public on September 19th with a modernized elevator, taking visitors up to see the highest view of the city. National Mall Tour in Washington, D.C.- FREE
Free Tours by Foot recently released a new kid-friendly version of the National Mall Tour. Great for kids 10 and younger, this is a shorter tour with less walking. You'll visit the WWII Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Korean Veteran's Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. There are scavenger hunts at each stop and an activity sheet they get to take home.
