Project Magellan from Active Minds Learing is a summer learning program for teens designed to engaged teens with experiential learning opportunities in subjects they like, and careers they are interested.    These week-long excursions take students to the frontline of history, to experiment with new technology, to explore their curiosity, to engage with professionals on possible career paths, and experience adventure. All programs are for teens grades 7-12.   English Language Arts - Creative Writing: July 28 - August 2nd On this week-long excursion, students will dive into the world of writing. They will explore different mediums, from creative fiction writing to journalism to poems to songwriting. Students will work directly with professional authors,  poets, and a hall of fame songwriter, as they experience the creative process of writing. They will delve into the history of America’s greatest writers, from Shel Silverstein to Mark Twain.  As well as touring one of the nations best writing programs at Northwestern University.   History - The Civil Rights Movement: July 14th - July 20th Take a journey back in time and walk with Dr. King in Birmingham, as he marched for Civil Rights. Experience life in the south, from an antebellum slave plantation to Jim Crow segregation to Emmett Till and the Civil Rights fight for freedom, equality and justice. Explore where history took place from sit-ins to freedom rides. Feel the tragedy, sacrifice, and the resolve that made Dr. King’s dream a reality.   Science - Engineering: June 30th - July 5th Engineering and artificial intelligence are the future, and this week long excursion is designed for students interested in being part of it! Partnering with Ohio State University, students will explore the engineering lab and see firsthand the technological revolution in mechanical and computer engineering, as well as artificial intelligence. Students will see how automation, and mechanical engineering, are changing production at Ford Motor Companies F-150 production line. Learn how design has been shaped by innovation from the Model T to the Wright Flyer at Ford’s design museum. Discovery Science Camp is a science teacher-led activity and excursion camp at The Heights School, an independent school for boys with a conveniently located and beautiful 29-acre wooded campus in Potomac, MD. Discovery Science Camp is a program designed around uniquely engaging activities and hands-on experiences involving science. For the past 25 years, this longest running camp at the school has been staffed exclusively by The Heights School's faculty - and it accomplishes more adventure in a few weeks than most camps offer in an entire summer. This summer, Discovery Science Camp will accomplish field trips in small groups of ten campers plus a faculty leader and staff member. Here is a sample of activities and trips that have been taken in past years: A visit to the NASA Goddard Space Center with a special presentation on the space shuttle, satellites, and the James Webb Telescope. The traditional helicopter egg drop engineering contest and a chance to make ice cream as a prize. An in-depth study of ecosystems and The Chesapeake Bay, including a visit to The Chesapeake Bay. Dissection of a shark and a chance to study Marine Biology. Construction of giant water balloon catapults and cannons as a fun way to learn about Newtonian Physics. Nature hikes that promote an understanding of Environmental Biology and the natural forces that shape our local environment, including visits to Cunningham Falls Park and the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve. A visit to the U.S. Naval Observatory Dome Telescope with a presentation on outer space. Woodworking and 2×4 bridge building for older campers to better understand engineering principles and design. Learning about Natural History through hikes and expert guest speakers invited with animals such as falconry from a Falconer and reptiles from a Zoologist. Visits to nearby Caverns of the Catoctin Mountains to learn more about cavern formation and Geology. Learn about Rocketry, how planes fly, and applied engineering demonstrations using model rockets and an opportunity for each camper to make and launch a model rocket. A visit to a large crop and dairy farm to better understand agricultural sciences and the work of farmers. Understanding Aeronautics, including a trip to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum and a tour from an F-16 pilot to learn about how planes fly. The chance to go creeking and explore the tiny, living world of microorganisms in naturally sourced water through the use of biology lab microscopes.   HURRY! Mary’s Land Camp, an ACA-accredited camp located in Howard County, invites you to join the camp family this 4th of July week for a farm camp session!    At Mary's Land Camp, the goal is to educate the youth about farming and other life skills. Campers are immersed into the outdoors, learning how to care for farm animals, plants and greenhouses, different types of water conservation, getting hands-on experience in nature exploration, and more.    Campers are required to be ages 4-12 years old. There is a 1:8 counselor to camper ratio. The camp day starts at 9:00 am and ends at 3:00pm with before and after care offered for an additional cost.   Mary’s Land Camp counselors are top quality young adults who care about the well being of each camper. They are required to be 18 years or older, complete full CPS background checks, and participate in our rigorous training and farm-specific first aid programs. Calling all Horse Lovers! Saddle up for some serious fun this summer at Cavallo Riding Center Horse Lovers Camp in Leesburg! Cavallo Riding Center (CRC), part of Cavallo Farm, is bringing back their Horse Lovers Camp. Designed for campers who have never ridden a horse or been exposed to one and want to learn about what it is like to be around horses and ponies. Campers will also learn what it is like to ride a pony/horse via a daily supervised lesson or trail ride. During the trail ride or lesson, the horse will be led by the instructor to ensure the safety of the camper. Beef up your child's acting chops at Comedy Camp with The Improv Theater!   A bit more sophisticated than a regular theater camp, your child will learn how to generate "quick on your feet" improvisational approaches to acting. The experiences gained have led some past participants to auditions and actual bookings!   In this safe space, beginner and more experienced Improv students ages 7-17 will discover creative writing, critical thinking, public speaking, team dynamic, leadership skills and self confidence. Each day, campers play improv comedy games, develop original stand-up and sketch comedy and engage in mock performance. Most campers attend two to four weeks but every week is self contained with a performance showcase every Friday for invited guests.   Since 2003, Improv 4 Kids/Teens has been presenting shows and classes in Times Square NYC and touring schools, camps, and community centers nationwide.
